Granite is one of the most common igneous rock types. It is formed when magma beneath the earth's surface cools relatively slowly which creates the crystals and granular texture distinctive to granite. It lacks internal structures making it hard and tough which is ideal for construction. It has been used for centuries for many different purposes.
Marble is a metamorphic limestone. It is formed when limestone undergoes change when it is heated and pressurised. This developes larger crystals. Marble is commonly used in statues and construction because it is easy to carve or cut into shapes.
Limestone is an organic, sedimentary rock with many inclusions of tiny shells and micro-skeletons. It is formed in layers that make the rock permeable. It is readily available and relatively easy to cut. Limestone is very common in architecture due to its aesthetics and durability although it can be effected by acid rain.
Sandstone (sometimes known as arenite) is a sedimentary rock composed mainly of sand-sized minerals or rock grains. Sandstone is a very common and perhaps the best known sedimentary rock. Some sandstones are resistant to weathering, yet are easy to work with. This makes sandstone a common building and paving material.
Onyx is a semi-precious stone commonly used in jewellary. It is a banded variety of chalcedony (quartz). It is a hard stone that makes it a true alternative to granite but it is not as commonly used as a building material because it is far more rare which makes it more expensive. People should take care when managing onyx as it is sensitive to disinfectants, alcohol, and inflammable substances such as petrol.
Engineered stone, also referred to as agglomerate, is a man-made composite material comprising of rock and resin. It requires less maintenance and has better resistance to stains and bacterial contamination than natural stones. It is uniform in structure makeing it very strong and durable with flexibility to prevent cracking under flexural pressure. However it is not UV stable and should not be used in exterior spaces.
Ceramic and porcelain tiles make the ideal floor and wall covering to compliment any room. Tiles are low maintenence, durable and don't hide little nasties like dust mites which make them a far better alternative to carpet. We also have a range of glass and marble mosaics to compliment your tiles and help create that eye-catching feature. Whether you want a bold statement or a natural look, we have the tile and mosaic suitable for your new space!
